Acute Surgical Pain Management Fellowship Learning Outcomes

Fellowship objectives and outcomes are achieved through a stepwise progression. The knowledge and skills described in the Fellow Learning Outcomes (FLO) are specific to each unit/module and clinical practicum. Fellows are expected to demonstrate competence in all aspects of regional anesthesia and pain management.

Fellow Learning Outcome 1:

Demonstrate professional conduct consistent with the AANA Code of Ethics, Scope of Practice, and Standards for Nurse Anesthesia Practice.

Fellow Learning Outcome 2:

Apply ultrasound technology to optimize patient management.

Fellow Learning Outcome 3:

Integrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology to guide pain management practice.

Fellow Learning Outcome 4:

Perform a detailed physical assessment for the management of patients experiencing pain across the lifespan.

Fellow Learning Outcome 5:

Develop a pain management plan to include interventional and noninterventional strategies based on patient, surgical, and analgesic requirements.

Fellow Learning Outcome 6:

Select and dose pharmacologic agents based on patient-specific, procedural, and pharmacologic considerations.

Fellow Learning Outcome 7:

Incorporate multimodal analgesic strategies, including neuraxial and peripheral nerve catheters, local anesthetic and opioid infusions, and non-opioid analgesic adjuvants as part of a pain service.

Fellow Learning Outcome 8:

Demonstrate competency in core regional anesthesia procedures.

Fellow Learning Outcome 9:

Determine the need for advanced pain management interventions in complex patient populations.

Fellow Learning Outcome 10:

Apply knowledge and procedural principles of advanced regional anesthesia techniques to expand pain management options for complex clinical presentations.

Fellow Learning Outcome 11:

Apply pain management techniques as appropriate for non-surgical patient populations.

Fellow Learning Outcome 12:

Evaluate the effectiveness of pain management interventions using clinical outcomes.

Fellow Learning Outcome 13:

Identify and manage failed or incomplete pain management interventions.

Fellow Learning Outcome 14:

Critically appraise and apply current evidence to guide pain management practice.

Fellow Learning Outcome 15:

Educate, mentor, and precept learners and colleagues in the safe, evidence-based practice of pain management.

Fellow Learning Outcome 16:

Engage in reflective practice and self-assessment to identify opportunities for continued professional growth and development.
